I’M SO Anxcited

You know those things that you’ve always wanted to do? You should go and do them!

And so be it. Tel Aviv is beautiful to see while flying above it before landing at one of the airports, but you know what’s even better? Seeing the city from an air balloon, so I did.

Flying in an air balloon has always been one of my dreams, and last week adidas made it come true.

It took place on a sunny day at the Yarkon park and I decided to wear my ‘adventure safari like’ outfit in natural suede which happened to work out so well with my ankle boots, but also with the my new ultra boost adidas sneakers.

Flying over the city was just as exciting as I thought it would be, but as for a while now, I have been dealing with Acrophopia which is a fear of heights, the few first minutes (ok, it was more than a few) were not very easy for me (I didn’t freak out, I swear!)

The thing with anxiety for me is that it is very tricky. First I expericed it quiet late in my life, and as I am also the kind of person who’s gets excited over everything that makes my adrenaline rush, rather than feeling fear or being scared, it really was a big thing to deal with. Secondly I wasn’t ready to surrender to it… I did not want to stop flying, climbing high, taking the underground or diving.

Although I’ve never been officially diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, I still needed to deal with the fact that my body and thoughts are responding with extreme fear to what was recognized before as fun and adventure.

Through this process I discovered something that totally surprised me: anxiety, fear and excitement are all related, as there are all emotional states characterized by high arousal, and have the same symptoms… And if you think about it, whether you excited or anxious your heart beats faster, your chest feel tight,  your mind race, and sometimes even your body shakes.

I’m sure that the majority of people, who deal with anxiety, usually cope with it by trying to relax, and that’s what I did for a while… It wasn’t always working…

Actually, there was research carried out that checked the most effective way of dealing with feelings of anxiety and found out that we should not try to calm down, we should – get excited, because when people feel anxiousness and try to calm down, they are thinking about all the things that could go wrong. While when they are excited, they are thinking about how things could go well.

The reason for this is because being anxious and excited are actually the same physiological states for your body so your mind can make the switch between those states much easier than it can between feeling anxious and calm.

Back to the air balloon…

After squeezing Vira’s hand and telling myself I’m excited, I looked at the amazing view and felt so lucky! There are absolutely no words to describe how incredible and breathtaking the experience is to fly over Tel Aviv’s skies. While on the ground, Tel Aviv is a constant energy and bustle, up in the sky the city feels so incredibly calm and peaceful, which made me feel even more excited.

When people usually ask me what is my dream, I answer I don’t really have one, I have goals. One of them was flying on an air balloon, and now I’m up for the next one… hold tight it’s coming soon.
